The Working Nomad

August 29th, 2007 by Erik

I was very interested to read a story in a recent edition of Business 2.0 magazine about a guy that works remotely as he travels the world – he calls himself the working nomad. This was particularly interesting to me because it’s been somewhat of a dream of mine to try this exact thing at some point in my life. Perhaps someday I will pack up and wander off but until then thank you WM for rekindling the dream!

On an unrelated note, I saw Stardust yesterday and must give a glowing recommendation (pun intended, I guess). See it if you haven’t, it’s a great show.

Utah Pig Crew Bus

August 16th, 2007 by Erik

I know, I know, I haven’t posted much mortgage-related material lately but what can I say… the industry is sort of in free fall right now and I’d rather think/write about happier things.

Soooooooo… that being said, check out the Utah Pig Crew Bus a group of die hard Utah fans are converting.

Been a While

August 7th, 2007 by Erik

Gads I haven’t posted in quite some time. Summer has flown by. The wholesale mortgage landscape is going crazy right now – subprime lenders are dropping like flies. It’ll be interesting to see how it all plays out.

In other Utah news… football season is almost here and this year should be a fun one for Utah fans. Sorry BYU fans – you’ll most likely be back to another losing season :)

Home prices here haven’t started falling, that I know of, but I suspect it won’t be too long til we catch up with the rest of the country. Hold on tight kids it’s going to be an interesting ride.

Do you need a mortgage in Delaware?

January 12th, 2007 by Erik

A fellow loan officer from Delaware has created his own mortgage blog, patterned largely after things I did with this site.  It will be fun to watch his new site ascend the ranks of Delaware Mortgages and begin to bring him (more) fame, fortune, and most importantly new friends (otherwise known as clients).  Good luck, John!

Happy 4th of July

July 2nd, 2006 by Erik

Although it’s only the 2nd, I wanted to post a quick holiday greeting because who knows if I’ll be around again this week.  So… have a great Independence Day to all my neighbors in Utah, everyone in the U.S., and to all the soldiers serving in Iraq and Afghanistan!

Brigham City Is A Friendly Town

June 26th, 2006 by Erik

Before leaving for a quick getaway last Friday, I had a feeling that my car was due for some trouble. Turns out the feeling was justified this time because my vehicle broke down just outside of Brigham City, on my way home from a weekend of fun.

Being a Sunday, none of the local repair shops were open and tow rates were a healthy $3 a mile (plus a $50 hookup fee). Since Brigham is about 50 miles from Salt Lake, that would have made my tow bill $350 (assuming they bill you for the round-trip miles) to tow the car to a shop near my house.

So I decided to have the car towed to a shop in Brigham and crashed in the Howard Johnson off 1200 South, which turned out to be much less expensive than towing back to SLC.

Everyone I met in Brigham was friendly and genuine, which I thought was noteworthy enough to post about. There’s even a taxi service that will take you anywhere you need to go in town for only $5.

I am a Witness

June 2nd, 2006 by Erik

Sports fans will think I’m referring to LeBron James, or perhaps Dirk Nowitzki, but such is not the case.  At least not in this instance.  I’m talking about a strange (and sad) thing that happened this weekend while en route to the movie theater at 3300 S and State.  I saw a man roughing up a woman in an argument on the sidewalk.

After pulling over and talking to the two briefly another car showed up, who had already phoned police.  The cops arrived a short time afterwards and several people filled out witness reports, myself included.  The man was put in the backseat of one of the police cruisers and the woman was taken home by family or neighbors – I didn’t catch who they were exactly.

I am doubtful that I’ll be called in to testify or anything like that, but you never know.  This is the second time I’ve filled out a witness report; the other was a much more dramatic episode that involved an under-cover cop being run over during a drug bust in Provo.

Anyway, the end.  I’ll have more mortgage-related-info soon.

Mortgage Fraud in Utah Possibly Helped Fund Suspected Terrorists

April 27th, 2006 by Erik

From today’s Salt Lake Tribune article “A Utah link to terrorism?“, five brothers are suspected of sending money to Jordan to help fund terrorist activities in the Middle East.  Apparently money came from mortgage and car loan fraud in Utah, among other places.

Veggie Burger with Bacon, Please

April 8th, 2006 by Erik

This has nothing to do with mortgages in Utah but I thought it was funny and worth telling.

So… I was finishing up a delicious breakfast yesterday at a little place up by the U (don’t recall the name right now, sorry) and while paying, my brother asked the waitress if the burgers were as good as the breakfast.

She quickly responded they were better.  Especially if you get bacon on them.  She then said how she loves the bacon there so much that she even gets bacon when ordering a veggie burger.  And if that weren’t enough, she proceeded to wonder aloud if ham might be better on her veggie burger next time, and that yes, indeed, she’d order ham on the next go.

Good stuff.
